3 Top tips for soulpreneurs
Follow your dreams
WELL DONE.
It can be tough to keep walking in the direction of your dreams and you don’t always get a pat on the back to say well done. So first up, let me say “well done”!
So let’s unpack it a bit further, what even is a soulpreneur?
A soulpreneur is an entrepreneur, freelancer, artist, craftsperson, coach or anyone else who looks at life, and business, as an opportunity for expression of their higher self. It’s a very different approach to the 9-5 grind. Soulpreneurs are wired a little differently! We don’t really like to conform to protocols and like the freedom that our vocation gives us.
DO WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU DO
For a long time I wrestled with my chosen career. I really didn’t get a sense of fulfilment from working in the corporate world, making fat cats fatter and feeding the hungry “disposable culture” beast. It also killed my creativity as I tried to conform to what I thought I should be doing, rather than expressing myself authentically. Nowadays, I get to do the two things I love to do… I get to be creative and I get to help others. Maybe you’ve finally bitten the bullet and you’re following your dreams? It’s so exciting to wake up each morning and love what you do but of course life doesn’t come with an instruction manual.
3 Top tips
These are my 3 top tips to anyone starting out as a Soulpreneur (valid as a gentle reminder too for those who have been following their passion for years).
1. PROTECT YOUR ENERGY
“You can’t pour from an empty cup”
Take the time to rest rather than giving up when you feel depleted. There will be many many distractions along the way. You have to remain focused, keep your eye on the prize and keep moving in the direction of your dreams every day.
2. RESILIENCE & AUTHENTICITY ARE BIGGIES
“It’s not personal”
I think the brutal world of modelling prepared me for rejection. Waiting in line with 200 other clones to be told no, without so much as looking at my portfolio past the first 2 pages! Brutal. You will of course also get people saying no to you, perhaps in a kinder way than my experience but it’s not personal. You won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, coffee, chai…you get the idea, but you will find your people by staying true to you.
“People want the real you, not a cookie-cutter clone”.
3. REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED
“Make it fun”
We all have our unique stories, our path is what makes us unique. Nobody is you and that’s your superpower. Sometimes it’s easy to forget why we started. I would strongly recommend healing and connecting with your inner child, make it fun. Being serious starves your creativity, so be playful, curious and always remember why you started.
